Interview with Artist Meghan Jones: Connecting People and the Ocean

Watch the interview with Meghan Jones, winner of the 2026 Under the Sea Connecting People and the Ocean category.

Meghan Jones has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, she primarily works in acrylic on canvas, and sometimes with graphite or colored pencils on paper. After a 20-year hiatus from painting, a chance connection with deep-sea scientists in 2023 rekindled her love for all things science, and prompted Meghan to begin a fine art career.

Her work focuses on the light, color and texture in the deep-sea below 1000m. Her modern impressionism painting style and research based art combine to raise awareness, and promote love for the deep ocean.

In 2025 Meghan co-founded the Unseen Ocean Collective; a trailblazing group of four women, three artists and a scientist, dedicated to revealing the beauty and wonder of the deep-sea through international art and science outreach events.

Q. If you could be any ocean creature, what would you be and why?

Maybe a grenadier, I think they’re are chunky and hilarious

“Grenadiers, also known as rattails, belong to the Family Macrouridae, which is the most diverse family within the order Gadiformes, with almost 400 recognized species. They have a worldwide distribution and are found at great depths, from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Members of this family are among the most abundant deep-sea fishes.”
