Ocean+Art+Engagement

An artist-led ocean literacy curriculum developed in direct collaboration between Moku Art Studio and MANGO Residencia. Together, the two organizations are transforming the work of Ocean Virtual Art Residency alumni into an artist-led ocean literacy curriculum.

Each lesson is co-developed with a residency artist, standards-aligned, and designed to work across grade levels with accessible materials. Available in English and Spanish, the lessons are formatted for the classroom but built to travel, just as at home in museums, nature clubs, homeschool groups, and other informal learning spaces.

WHY DRIFTLINE?

When artists teach the ocean, students listen differently.

Driftline was born inside the Ocean Virtual Art Residency, where artists repeatedly demonstrated that creativity makes ocean learning accessible, personal, and lasting. Each lesson is grounded in a real artist's practice and their relationship to the sea, not a textbook, not a worksheet, but a doorway through making.

Developed in partnership with MANGO Residencia and rooted in the Venice Declaration's vision of ocean literacy as a culture of care and stewardship. Available in English and Spanish.

Driftline has been recognized as part of UNESCO’s Blue Threads network, acknowledging its commitment to advancing ocean literacy through creative practice. This recognition highlights the project’s role in supporting inclusive, arts-led approaches to ocean stewardship and its contribution to fostering more sustainable and caring relationships with the ocean.
