The Ocean Within - Mini Exhibition
We are thrilled to welcome you to the artist briefing for The Ocean Within, a mini exhibition hosted at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California, during their Sharks at Night event, held on August 14th to 15th. This exhibition brings together artists from Moku Art Studio alongside partners YOI (Youth Oceanic Initiative) and DOSI (Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative), united by a shared fascination with what the ocean holds beyond the reach of human sight, scientifically, culturally, and emotionally. This is a small, intentional show. But we hope it is the beginning of something much larger, a proof of concept for what happens when ocean art, science, and advocacy share the same wall. We're glad you're here. Please read through all sections carefully before completing the submission form at the bottom of this page.
At this time, this Open Call is by Invitation only for DOSI, YOI and Moku artists.
In Partnership with the Ocean Institute, Moku Art Studio, YOI, and DOSI. Organized by Moku Art Studio.
About the Exhibition
Theme: The Ocean Within was chosen with the idea to invite the audience to witness and feel the unknown of the ocean, whether that is the ocean itself, the deep-sea, an interesting ocean creature, the human-ocean relationship, ancestral knowledge, research topic, or experience. As an artist, feel free to interpret the theme, but as always, keep the idea of ocean conservation, protection, and education in mind.
Venue: The Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California. The exhibition will be displayed on the interior wall panels of the venue during the Sharks at Night event, an evening program that draws a wide audience of families, ocean enthusiasts, students, and educators.
The Ocean Institute, founded in 1977, is a community-based 501(c)(3) organization that educates 100,000 children, teachers, parents, and visitors annually through over 60 marine science and maritime history programs. We are located on 2.4 acres in the Dana Point Harbor; adjacent to a Marine Protected Area. The facility is an ocean education center that offers in-depth marine science and maritime history programs.
The Institute includes state-of-the-art teaching labs, the spectacular Maddie James Seaside Learning Center, a historic tall ship, and an oceanographic research vessel. Immersion-based field trips range from one-hour science labs to multi-day programs at sea. All programs are designed to maximize immersion, spark curiosity, and inspire a deep commitment to learning.”
Format : This is a mini exhibition. Works will be mounted directly on the wall using removable mounting tape, unframed, creating an intimate and intentional display suited to the space and the theme. This will also help with shipping costs of the artworks.
